2D - Lighting

I felt like I could be painting anything, even a boat.
Thanks to Rachel Morton for the lighting setup.

I sketched the boat, though the sketch ended up being inaccurate, I had to warp my block colors a lot to get it looking like the image.

I blocked out the colors, then built up the shades, and ran everything over with a blending brush.

Drew Struzen: Composition

This assignment was focused on composition, using Drew Struzan's work as reference.

I decided to base mine off of this Zathura poster because I am a sucker for nostalgia.
I had decided, even before deciding on a poster that I  wanted to do something that was stylistically very different from the source material.

I first did the sketch, I tried to get kind of an Earthbound look for the proportions.

I did lineart, I chose pink to really make it look colorful, and filled with flat colors.

Then, I added shadow using a multiply layer and highlight using a glow dodge layer.

And the finishing touches with some brush effects, gradients, and more blending layers.

The piece uses triangular composition.

Week 3: Life Drawing

Week 2: Life Drawing

Value: Frank Frazetta

I chose to do this one because it had less shading already on it than a lot of the others, and I thought the lion was cute.

I put down base values, then progressively added darker shades to build up depth, then went back in with white to add highlights.

I hope I added something of value to the original!

2D Art Week 1: Life Drawing #1

This life drawing session was focused on a diagram of a basic skeleton and trying to show where bones show just under skin when drawing people. I have much to learn about anatomy, as I haven't really had any formal training in the fundamentals.

This was also my first time doing life drawing with a nude model. I don't think I've ever even drawn a naked person.

2D Art Week 1: Syd Mead Basic Shapes

Syd Mead is the concept artist best known for his work on Blade Runner, Aliens, and Tron.

Did you know that he also did mecha designs for Gundam?

Specifically ∀ Gundam?

The best* one!

*(The only one I've watched I haven't gotten around to any others yet so I can't actually say which is the best don't @ me)

neat-o

So obviously I chose this one because mecha and orange lighting are my
A E S T H E T I C

First, I isolated and sketched what I thought were the basic shapes of the figure.

Then, I brushed on a base color for the mech's silhouette, and progressively built up the shading on top of that. It was looking a little undefined after that, so I added some lines to sharpen it up.

I switched to blue!
for contrast?

I should have taken progress shots, but I didn't know we had to until it was done...

I don't have much experience with soft shading, but all things considered, I think this went pretty well.
